While San Rafael may get less attention than the more affluent towns of Marin County—located just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco—it still has much to offer. More About San Rafael, California

jewel of San Rafael is its historic downtown on Fourth Street. The restaurants are packing them in, especially on weekends, with many Asian, Mexican and California-cuisine establishments. Several coffeehouses and the classic, three-screen Rafael Film Center, which shows exclusively independent films, add to the crowds. And expect to walk a few blocks if you visit on a Thursday night between late-spring and early-autumn when the Downtown Farmers’ Market is going on, with its 200+ vendors. There’s another big Farmers’ Market in town, too, on Thursday and Sunday mornings year-round, at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Civic Center.

Culture is easy to find in San Rafael. Second Fridays Art Walks on Fourth Street feature wine, cheese and art appreciation; there are world-class performances at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium; and the small, but delightful Marin History Museum is housed in an 1879 Victorian near downtown. Also, just off Fourth Street you can visit the 1817 Mission San Rafael or the Carnegie library.

Further out of town, shoppers can visit recently renovated Northgate Mall and outdoors lovers can head out to the forest trails of China Camp State Park, just east of San Rafael on San Francisco Bay. There’s never a shortage of things to do in San Rafael.
